TRIAL INFORMATION

Summary: High Cholesterol at High Risk for Coronary Heart Disease Volunteers with Metabolic Syndrome (see below for definition) and High Cholesterol at High Risk for Coronary Heart Disease

Study Description:

This study is for patients with metabolic syndrome and hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol) at high risk for coronary heart disease. Metabolic syndrome is a group of health problems that include high triglycerides, elevated blood sugar, low HDL cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoker, diabetes, and waist greater than or equal to 40 inches for males and 35 inches for females. The purpose of this study is to test the safety and effectiveness of one drug compared to another. The study involves two drugs that are already approved for treatment of high cholesterol. If eligible, you will receive one of the two research medications.

Inclusion Criteria: To be eligible for the study patients must:

  • Be male or female 18-79 years of age

  • Have high cholesterol

  • Be at risk of coronary heart disease

  • Willing to maintain a cholesterol lowering diet for the duration of the study

  • Have high glucose

Exclusion Criteria: If the study patients:

  • Screening values are outside ranges described in the protocol

  • Weight is less than 100 pounds

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding

  • Consume more than 2 alcoholic drinks per day
